WORSHIP/PRAYER MINISTRIES
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion
Assist in the distribution of the Eucharist at weekend and weekday liturgies. They may also take Communion to the sick/homebound. Must be an adult, confirmed Catholic and in good standing in the Roman Catholic Church. Must participate in a training session and requires new commissioning each year.

Choir, Cantors and Music Ministers:
They prepare and practice musical aspects of our liturgies, and lead the assembly in liturgical singing. Practice is about 2 hours a week, weekend Masses as scheduled.
Instrumentalist: The liturgy is enhanced by the playing of strings, brass, and drums. Skill level must be adequate to learn music as required. A 30-minute rehearsal is held for the following week after the 8 AM and 10:30 AM masses. Currently have violins, flute, cello, clarinet, trumpets, and saxophone. All instrumentalists need to arrive at mass 20-30 minutes early to tune and warm up.

Lector
Proclaim scriptural passages to congregation as part of the Liturgy of the Word (once or twice a month). Must participate in a training session and requires new commissioning each year. Click here to see the Lector's Guidelines.

Altar Server

Usher & Greeters
Men and women who welcome us to Mass, and help facilitate our participation throughout the Mass. They also help with offertory collection, and assist in any emergency situation that may arise.

Sacristan and Altar Guild
Ensure that the altar is ready for the celebration of Eucharist to include the preparation of vessels, sacramentary, lectionary, and Lector’s book. Additionally, the sacristan and assistants launder altar cloth, purificators, have priest’s vestments dry cleaned and overseas the order of the sacristy.

The Liturgy Committee
Prepares and evaluates our parish liturgies, especially during major seasons, and monitors adherence to rubrics and liturgical principals. Meets quarterly.

Cleaning Angels
Men and women who clean and decorate our church space. Usually on Saturday and Monday mornings.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Group devoted to regular prayer with the Blessed Mother under the title of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Meets weekly for an hour prayer on Wednesday evenings.

El Shaddai
El Shaddai DWXI Prayer partners Fellowship International is one of the largest Catholic charismatic movements in the world. A group meets here at St. Pius X for prayer, study, and felowship in Memorial Hall on Saturdays from 2:30-4:30 pm.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Presiders and assistants lead children ages 4-8 in their own Liturgy of the Word during the first part of the Mass. Lesson plans are provided. VIRTUS trained is required. Lead one liturgy per month, weekend Masses as scheduled.

PASTORAL CARE/JUSTICE & PEACE MINISTRIES
Food Pantry
Help sort and shelve food donations from Sunday Mass, and keep pantry in order. Prepare bags of food for pick-up by the needy. If able to help two hours on any day, Mondays through Thursday from 9:00 AM – 3 PM, and Friday 9AM-12:30PM.

Funeral Mass Ministry
Help with the funeral Mass upon the death of a person, for around 2 hours.

Funeral Reception Ministers
Provide food and/or serve during receptions following funeral services of a parishioner. Includes food preparation, set up, and clean up of the Parish Hall.

Giving Tree
Bring Christmas joy to families and adults in need of assistance. Collect and prepare gifts. Work with this ministry the weeks preceding Christmas.

Holiday Food Baskets

Homebound & Hospital Visitors

St. Pius X Migrant Ministry
This ministry provides support to migrant farm workers on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Activities include collection and coordination of donations (mainly clothing and food) for migrant workers, and simple gifts for workers who remain year round. Those who wish may also participate in brief mission trips to the Eastern Shore to deliver items and get to know the workers and their needs.
Mainly during the Spring and Summer months, as needed.

Ministries to the Homeless: NEST (Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team)
It is a seasonal ministry. Once a year, St. Pius X hosts a "traveling shelter" for a week. We provide a hot meal and a safe place to socialize and sleep for homeless guests. There are a variety of ways to help, from greeting guests as they arrive, to preparing and serving meals, to monitoring the doors overnight.

Pastoral Care Committee
Oversees the various ministries which provide direct support to those in need. It meets once a month.

Soup and Sandwich Preparation
Prepare soup and sandwiches for the homeless in support of the Catholic Worker. Soup and sandwiches are made each Wednesday afternoon. The meal is taken downtown early Thursday morning. Volunteers are welcome to assist in any one or all of these areas. Teams work on a rotating schedule. Food preparers are required to have a food handler’s card.

Adopt-a-Spot
Individuals or entire families choose their favorite church garden space to keep cleaned weeded, mulched and pruned. 2 hours a week during warm months; as needed other times.

Building and Grounds Maintenance
Help by using your skills in carpentry and painting, etc. to do minor repairs for small maintenance projects in parish buildings and/or to help maintain parish grounds and participate in beautification projects as needed.

Fil-Am Society of St. Pius X
Provides opportunities for fellowship and worship within our Filipino-American community. Meetings are on the 4th or last Sunday of every month from 12:30-4:00 PM.

Members are appointed by the Pastor, and advise him on parish financial matters. They assist in preparing and monitoring the budget.

Funsters
A fun gathering of parish adults for activities and/or speakers with refreshments provided. This group meets monthly on the 3rd or 4th Friday for about an hour in either Memorial Hall or occasionally at the convent. Sr. Regina prepares everything needed for participants to join the fun! All are welcome.

Offertory Counters
Count Sunday collection offering and prepare bank deposits. Approximately three (3) hours, every 5th Sunday as scheduled.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION
Catechist
Teachers that share the light of faith with others. Catechists are always needed for children, youth, and adults. Must be VIRTUS trained and attend diocesan catechist training.
Catechist Assistant
Help catechists with sessions and activities. Must be VIRTUS trained. Assist one hour session about 3 times a month (Fall through Spring), assist with whole community gatherings once a month, preparation during week.
Hall Monitors
Help maintain a safe environment during catechetical gatherings. Must be VIRTUS trained. Two hours on Sunday about once a month.
Meal Preparation and Service
Prepare & serve simple meals and snacks for whole community faith formation gatherings. Whole Community gatherings are on Sundays about once a month.
Sacramental Preparation for Children
Assists parents preparing for their child's baptism, and families preparing for a child's First Eucharits and First Reconciliation. Must be VIRTUS trained. About one hour each week. This ministry is seasonal.
Sacramental Sponsors
Serve as mentors for those adults and youth preparing for Batism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Must be VIRTUS trained. Ideally, meet with candidate at least once a week.
The Christian Initiation Team
Coordinates the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) for adults and children who are 7 or older. Time: Extended catechisis every Tuesday from 5:30-6:30 pm, and Dismissal catechesis during designated Masses.
Vacation Bible School Teams
Can serve in a variety of roles in support of our annual summer VBS. Must be VIRTUS trained. Positions needed: Catechists, Game leaders, Food preparation, Set-up and Clean-up, and Hall Monitors. VBS is held once a year in the summer for a week. Ideally helpers can commit to each day (5 days, about 3 hours a day), so there is consistency for the participants.

Youth Ministry
Works under the direction of the Youth Minister to provide social and spiritual ministry for youth (Grades 6-12). Activities include Sunday sessions, retreats, prayer, small groups, music, and community service. Must be VIRTUS trained. Activities are scheduled throughout the year. Assist as your schedule allows.

Run various fundraisers throughout the year to fund school activities. H&S hosts and funds assemblies for students and their families and helps purchase equipment for the school.

Help to teach children good sportsmanship and teamwork. Volunteers are needed with the concession set-up and clean-up, crowd control, and time clock at the home basketball games. A Booster Chairperson, coaches, and assistants for basketball and soccer are also needed.

Calling all Catholic men 18 years or older. Come join in an organization that is devoted to the Catholic Church, the Pope, Bishops and Priests. The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal, Catholic, family, non-profit organization based upon the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. We are one of the prime sponsors of the Special Olympics. Membership in our Council is from many of the Catholic Churches in Norfolk.
