Matthew 9:1-8

In previous passages from Matthew’s gospel, Jesus has shown his power over nature and demons. In this passage he exercises power over sin, making clear his authority to forgive and to heal. Though Matthew’s account does not contain the details that Mark’s does, it is important to note the faith of the friends of the paralytic, shown by the lengths to which they go to get him to Jesus.

Though illness is not punishment for sin, I see that forgiveness and healing do go hand in hand. And it is because of the gift of faith that I confidently turn to you to be healed.
