Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion
Assist in the distribution of the Eucharist at weekend and weekday liturgies. Must be an adult, confirmed Catholic and in good standing in the Roman Catholic Church. Must participate in a training session and requires new commissioning each year.

Altar Server
Assist in the celebration of Sunday and Holy Day liturgies. Training sessions provided. Fifth graders and older are encouraged to participate.

Greet people coming to Mass, assist in seating, help with offertory collection, and ensure a smooth flow to and from Eucharistic stations, and assist in any emergency situation that may arise.

Sacristan / Altar Guild
Ensure that the altar is ready for the celebration of Eucharist to include the preparation of vessels, sacramentary, lectionary, and Lector’s book. Additionally, the sacristan and assistants launder altar cloth, purificators, have priest’s vestments dry cleaned and overseas the order of the sacristy.

Liturgical / Seasonal Decorations
Use your decorating skills to assist with enhancing the liturgy. Help to reflect the church seasons through visual display.

Cleaning Angels
Dusting, polishing and general cleaning of the sanctuary space. Come as part of a team or as a family to keep the worship center as sparkling as Easter and Christmas every day.

Volunteer Coordinator Team
Work with parish organizations/ministries and Volunteer Coordinator to establish a pool of volunteers to assist in all activities of our active parish.

Hospitality Committee
Prepare coffee and serve donuts in the Parish Hall on Sunday mornings after the 8:00 AM and 10:30 AM Masses.

Offertory Counters
Count collection contributions and prepare bank deposits for approximately three (3) hours, every 5th Sunday.

Building and Grounds Maintenance
Help by using your skills in carpentry and painting, etc. to do minor repairs for small maintenance projects in parish buildings and/or to help maintain parish grounds and participate in beautification projects as needed.

Office Helpers
Assist in the parish office as needed to do a variety of tasks such as stuff bulletins, prepare mailings, run off copies, answer the telephone and greet people.

Parish Library
Catalog new materials, maintain collection, etc.  This lending library of religious books, periodicals and tapes is available for all parishioners.

Plant Care
Water and maintain all living plants inside the Church.

Choose your favorite garden space to keep cleaned, mulched and pruned. Families welcomed. This is a good way to provide service to your church while teaching your children the meaning of stewardship.

Hospital Visiting
Must be trained Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Visit and take the Eucharist to parishioners who are hospitalized. This is an ongoing commitment. You may be called upon to make a visit approximately once every two (2) weeks.

Homebound Visiting
Must be trained Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Visit and take the Eucharist to parishioners who are homebound. This is an ongoing commitment. You will be paired with a homebound parishioner and will make arrangements with them concerning the frequency of regular visits.

Bereavement Ministry
Represent the parish in offering spiritual support to the family at the death of a loved one. Visit the family in their home.

Bereavement Reception Ministry
Provide food and/or serve during receptions following funeral services.  Includes food preparation, set up, and clean up of the Parish Hall.

Bereavement Support Ministry
This group meets 3X yearly to remember our deceased loved ones in prayer, story and discussion. We meet at St. Pius Convent; check the parish bulletin for our timely announcement. Open to all.

Ministry to the Homeless (Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team)

Participate in the St. Pius X NEST program when we open our doors to the homeless as a shelter for one week during the winter months. Organizers needed to work with a team prior to and during the shelter week to plan and communicate information to the volunteers of the parish.

Food Pantry
Help organize and maintain St. Pius’s Food Pantry: sort weekly food collections from Sunday Liturgy and pack bags of food for pick up in the Parish Office. Work Mondays from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM.

Soup and Sandwich Preparation
Prepare soup and sandwiches for the homeless in support of the Catholic Worker.  Soup and sandwiches are made each Wednesday afternoon.  The meal is taken downtown early Thursday morning.  Volunteers are welcome to assist in any one or all of these areas. Teams work on a rotating schedule. Food preparers are required to have a food handler’s card.

St. Pius X Migrant Ministry
This ministry provides SPX Community and Youth Ministry opportunities for short mission trips to aid migrants workers on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Activities include collection and coordination of donations of needed items for migrant workers and providing Christmas presents and stockings to support the families in need year round. We also provide prayer and encouragement for the migrant workers and their families. This ministry partners with St. Peter the Apostle Church, Sacred Heart, Blessed Sacrament, and St. Therese as well as other churches and ministries.

The New Evangelization Team
The purpose of the parish evangelization team is primarily to function as a catalyst to help the whole parish, and all its ministries, to evangelize. Since evangelization is the mission of the entire Church and all its members, the Evangeliczation Team examines various ministries of the parish, how they can serve the mission of the evangelization and proposes new ministries that would serve the goals of evangelization.

Men’s Club
Join with other men of the parish whose purpose is to serve their parish through service projects for the parish and school as well as provide community social opportunties.  We also support ongoing spiritual development.

Young Adult Ministry (YAM)
Social and Spiritual Ministry is for singles and couples in their late teens and 20’s.  Strives to meet throughout the year for a variety of activities including parties, outings, and conventions.  Wouldn’t you like to be a YAM too?

A fun gathering of parish adults for activities and/or speakers with refreshments provided. This group meets monthly on the 3rd or 4th Friday for about an hour in either Memorial Hall or occasionally at the convent. Sr. Regina prepares everything needed for participants to join the fun! Giving Tree
Bring Christmas joy to families and adults in need of assistance. Make ornaments designating gifts needed, put up giving tree, pass out ornaments, collect and sort the gifts.  Work with this ministry during November – December.

Ever Caring Prayer Ministry
A prayer ministry whose members pray for individulas requesting preayer for themselves, family and/or loved ones. The groups meets on Sunday mornings after the 8 AM mass in the school’s teachers’ lounge.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help
A novena of prayer is said in the church each Wednesday at 5 PM.  Mass is celebrated monthly.

Adult Choir: The choir participates at the 10:30 Sunday Mass. Practice is on a weekly schedule set by the director.  Newcomers please contact Kim Boyd for current schedule.

Instrumentalist: The liturgy is enhanced by the playing of strings, brass, and drums. Skill level must be adequate to learn music as required.  A 30-minute rehearsal is held for the following week after the 8 AM and 10:30 AM masses. Currently have violins, flute, cello, clarinet, trumpets, and saxophone.  All instrumentalists need to arrive at mass 20-30 minutes early to tune and warm up.

Cantor: The cantor leads the assembly in song. The Responsorial Psalm and Gospel Acclamation verses require solos. Voices must be inviting and guide the assembly in singing Hymns and parts of the Mass. The participation and response of the assembly is of utmost importance in the Liturgy. Area cantor workshops are available to help in training and growth.

Youth Choir: Youth ages 10-18 invited. Vocals and instrumentalist welcomed. Rehearsals will be scheduled by the Music Coordinator.  Children sing once a month at weekend mass.  Rehearsal schedule set by Rosell Carr. See contact information above.

Youth Ministry
Work under the direction of our Youth Minister to provide social and spiritual ministry for youth in grades 6 thru 12.  The Youth Group strives to meet throughout the year for a variety of activities including retreats, prayer, concerts, parties and outings.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Adapted for Children
Teach Children (age 7 or older) preparing for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Holy Eucharist, Confirmation). Pathways certification and Safe Environment clearance are required for cathechists.

Catechist (Grades Pre-K – 12)
Teach the Catholic faith to parish youth grades pre-K – 12 during religious education.   Pathways certification and Safe Environment clearance are required.

Assistant to Catechist
Assist teachers in the classroom with lesson plans and special activities. Safe Environment clearance is required.

Special Needs Assistant
Assist the catechist with instruction and activities for a special needs child in the classroom. Safe Environment clearance is required.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Help to lead in the Liturgy of the Word each Sunday from September through May. Lesson plans are provided. Safe Environment clearance is required.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

Adult Confirmation Sponsor
Share faith with an adult who is preparing for full initiation into the Catholic faith.  Sponsorship involves affirmation of your faith, introduction to parish life, willingness to listen and talk with candidates during their faith journey.

RCIA Team Member
Participate in various areas of the RCIA process. Responsibilities vary but include welcoming adults inquiring about the Catholic Church, catechesis, supporting sponsors, assisting with liturgical rites, joining with others for scripture reflection, prayer and discussion. Team members average 4-5 hours of ministry per month.

School Board
An advisory committee for the Pastor and School Principal in matters of the school.  This is an appointed position.

Home & School Association
Run various fundraisers throughout the year to fund school activities.  Annual events include the Halloween Party/Dance, Kids Bingo, and a Valentine’s or Mardi Gras Family Dance.  H&S hosts and funds assemblies for students and their families and helps purchase equipment for the school.

St. Pius X Athletic Association
Help to teach children good sportsmanship and teamwork.  Volunteers are needed with the concession set-up and clean-up, crowd control, and time clock at the home basketball games.  A Booster Chairperson, coaches, and assistants for basketball and soccer are also needed.

Participate in a very active scouting program in our parish.  Not only is it open to those girls and boys wishing to share in the Scouting movement, but also to those adults willing to help on the Scouting Committee.

Knights of Columbus (Norfolk Council # 367)
Calling all Catholic men 18 years or older.  Come join in an organization that is devoted to the Catholic Church, the Pope, Bishops and Priests.  The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal, Catholic, family, non-profit organization based upon the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.  We are one of the prime sponsors of the Special Olympics.  Membership in our Council is from many of the Catholic Churches in Norfolk.   Meetings are held the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 7:30 PM at our council home located at 5201 Kennebeck Ave.  Check our website at
