New Evangelization

St. Pius X Catholic Church embraces the New Evangelization.

St. Pius X is in the beginning stages of an exciting transformation called, The New Evangelization – Encountering the Joy of the Gospel! The New Evangelization calls for each one of us to deepen our faith, believe in the Gospel message and go forth to proclaim the Gospel. The New Evangelization can best be described as a new or renewed excitement and enthusiasm for Jesus Christ, our faith and the gospel. The New Evangelization invites each Catholic to renew their relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church and to regain that excitement and enthusiasm once again in their lives.

The concept of a “new” evangelization had its beginnings in the Second Vatican Council. Later, Pope John Paul II called for new fervor, new expressions and new methods to reach out to an increasingly secular culture. Pope Benedict XVI called the Church to evangelize by entering into dialogue with modern culture and confronting the cultural crisis brought on by secularization. In 2013, Pope Frances released an apostolic exhortation titled “The Joy of the Gospel” which focused on “the church’s primary mission of evangelization in the modern world.” The Second Vatican Council provided clear requirements for the implementation of The New Evangelization, as can be seen in the Richmond Diocesan Five Year Plan, to be implemented by the local parishes of the diocese.

St. Pius X has formed a New Evangelization Team to provide the necessary leadership to develop and oversee implementation of the plan. New members are welcome.  Current members include representatives from major ministries within our parish community.  The team is comprised of Sr. Anne Marie (IHM, Director of Religious Education), Debbie Morris (New Evangelization Team Coordinator), Lydia Smith (Legion of Mary), Jeanette Mendoza (Welcoming Committee Ministry), and Juan Gonzalez (Parish Council).

“Encounter the Joy of the Gospel and Set the World Ablaze” is the Diocese of Richmond’s five-year pastoral plan for the new evangelization, anchored in Jesus’ joyful message. Each year of the plan has a specific focus. It captures the joy of the Gospel in two phases: the internal conversion of individuals and parishes, and the external proclamation of this Good News to the world.

Year One of the Diocesan Plan emphasizes personal growth in “encountering the joy of the Gospel” and building a closer relationship with Christ. This theme continues into Year Two, with an emphasis in the domestic Church and the family.  Based on an inward focus, its primary goal is getting parishioners excited and inspired about their faith and their relationship with Our Lord Jesus Christ.

During the initial stages, the New Evangelization Team has developed two goals:

Goal 1: To bring about a renewed enthusiasm to the members of our parish for living and sharing their faith, with the objective of proclaiming and preaching the centrality of the Eucharist in our personal lives.

Goal 2: “To bring about renewed and increased involvement in our parish ministries to expand the focus of the evangelization message” with the objective of proclaiming and spreading the gospel in our parish ministries.
